ANSers seek social integrity through art sharing

Art & Sharing is not just another non-profit organization that funds itself through posh charity events and fundraising galas. Since its establishment in April of 2009 by a group of Korean university students, this volunteer club has tried to bridge social divides through art and culture.

The ANSers, as the club members call themselves, hail from a range of majors, from art and music to business administration and anthropology. Together they assemble different volunteering ideas that are ultimately reassembled in playful and imaginative ways through open dialogues and discussions. The best ideas are put into practice under the motto of “Creative Sharing,” and offer various cultural experiences to those who are often excluded from enjoying art and culture.

The audiences for ANSers’ projects vary from seniors residing in long-term care hospitals to educationally marginalized children. The club members have volunteered to support multicultural families, as well. In January 2010, it hosted a three-day fine arts education course for children from multicultural families, in collaboration with the Dongjak district’s Multicultural Family Support Center.

On December 27, the group organized a special exhibition for migrant spouses, named “Canvas of Dream,” at Wonjin Green Hospital. “Canvas of Dream” is a serial exhibition curated with the participation of target audiences.

Prior to the exhibition, ANSer met with twenty migrant spouses who worked as caregivers at the hospital and asked about their happiest moment. Each participant’s happiest moment was subsequently transformed into a “virtual vocabulary” and displayed. Later, ANSers offered the paintings to the participants.
